Seamless learning: ervaringsgericht leren in formele en informele contexten ‘overbruggen’ door technologie

Als kind leren we door vallen en opstaan, door dingen na te doen en uit te proberen, door ontdekking en spel, gedreven door onze eigen nieuwsgierigheid en bijgestuurd door onze fouten. We leren door zowel te denken als te doen. Kortom: we leren van onze ervaringen. Ook uit onderzoek blijkt dat het voor leren van belang is om vanuit ervaring abstracte concepten (theorie) met concrete, praktische (leer)ervaringen te verbinden. Hierdoor wordt leren betekenisvoller, persoonlijker, motiverender, toepassingsgerichter en duurzamer.

Ervaringsgericht leren van, in en tussen contexten heeft belangrijke gevolgen voor de organisatie van het leerproces, de (leer)uitkomsten, de gevoelde autonomie van lerenden en de blijvende en levenslange ontwikkeling van competenties. Door leren van ervaringen in en tussen contexten zien lerenden de relatie tussen (hun eigen) ideeën en talenten, (21^eeeuwse) vaardigheden en houding en (eigen) activiteiten in de echte wereld beter. Zij ervaren met verschillende zintuigen eigenschappen van dingen (bijv. geur), waardoor het inzicht in de ‘toepasbaarheid ’en ‘betekenis’ van het geleerde toeneemt en het geleerde beter onthouden wordt. Het leren speelt zich niet in isolatie of in een vacuüm af, maar gebeurt vaak samen met anderen, als een sociaal proces van betekenisverlening. Variatie van context is juist weer belangrijk om de transfer van het geleerde van de ene naar de andere context te bevorderen.

‘Seamless learning’ richt zich op het doormiddel van technologie draadloos en naadloos verbinden van (leer)ervaringen in verschillende contexten en het hierdoor ondersteunen, verbeteren en versterken van leerprocessen.  Seamless leerscenario’s bieden mogelijkheden voor het aanleren van vakoverstijgende(21^eeeuwse) vaardigheden, het leren toepassen van kennis en het ondersteunen van persoonlijke bewustwordings- en gedragsveranderingen.

Na de conferentie:

• bent u bekend met de belangrijkste concepten rondom ‘Seamless learning’
• heeft u verschillende voorbeelden van seamless leerscenario’s en digitale instrumenten gezien
• kent u een aantal ‘seamless’ ontwerpprincipes en heeft u deze ontwerpprincipes, samen met anderen, toegepast in een ‘oefen-context

De conferentie is tweetalig. In de ochtend beginnen we met een Engelstalige introductie van de belangrijkste concepten, een keynote en voorbeelden van ‘Seamless’ leerscenario’s en digitale instrumenten.  Tijdens de middagpauze zijn er posterpresentaties met verschillende  ‘Seamless learning’ projecten in het Engels. In de middag volgt een aantal Nederlandstalige workshops, waarin de deelnemers in verschillende groepen samen aan de slag gaan om voor een bepaalde context een ‘naadloos’ leerscenario te ontwerpen.  Er zullen dan verschillende vertegenwoordigers van organisaties uit de publieke sector (bijv. musea) aanwezig zijn om de mogelijkheden van deze context toe te lichten. Daarnaast krijgt u een introductie in belangrijke ontwerpprincipes om een continue, ononderbroken leerproces in verschillende contexten te ondersteunen.

Voor wie bedoeld?

Deze conferentie is voor leer-en ontwikkelings professionals uit het onderwijs, bedrijfsleven en de publieke sector die geïnteresseerd zijn in hoe persoonlijke ervaringen in informele leersituaties (bijv. op het werk, in musea of dierentuin) door middel van draagbare technologie verbonden kunnen worden met formele leeractiviteiten. Daarnaast kijken we naar hoe het ‘leren van ervaring’ in het formele onderwijs (draadloos en naadloos) ontworpen kan worden, om het aanleren van vakoverstijgende(21^eeeuwse) vaardigheden te ondersteunen, toepasbare kennis te ontwikkelen en lerenden bewust te maken van persoonlijk talent en gedrag.

Seamless Learning: Technology-enhanced learning from practical experiences across contexts

For whom is this conference?
This conference is for learning and development professionals from educational, business and public sectors who are interested in knowing how personal experiences in informal learning situations (e.g., at work, in museums or at the zoo) can be linked to formal learning activities by means of technology.

What are we talking about?
As a child, we learn by experience, by trial and error, through discovery and play, largely driven by our own curiosity. We learn by doing as well as by thinking:  we learn from our mistakes and we do better while gaining experience. To summarize, we learn from our practical experiences. Moreover, research has shown that learning takes place when we link abstract concepts (theory) with concrete, practical (learning) experiences. This makes learning more meaningful, personal, motivating, application-oriented and sustainable.

Experience-oriented learning in and across contexts has critical consequences on the design of learning processes, learning outcomes, the perceived autonomy of learners as well as their permanent and lifelong competency development. By fostering learning from experiences in and across contexts, learners are better able to see the relationships between their ideas and talents, 21^st century skills and attitudes, and their own impact on and activities in the ‘real world’. They experience characteristics of things with different senses (e.g., smell) which provide critical insight into the possible application, significance and meaning of the learning experience. This, in turn, also fosters better recall of learning experiences.  Learning does not take place in isolation or in a vacuum. It often occurs together with peers in a social process of meaning-making. Additionally, the variation of contexts is instrumental to promote learning transfer from one context to another.

Seamless learning focuses on connecting learning and other experiences in and across varying contexts wirelessly and seamlessly by technology in order to mediate, to support, and strengthen learning processes.  Seamless learning scenarios offer opportunities for acquiring cross-curricular generic (21^st  century) skills, for applying knowledge as well as for developing and promoting personal awareness and behavioural changes.

After the conference, you will:

• be familiar with the most important concepts and background of  seamless learning
• have seen examples of seamless learning orchestration and digital tools to support  learning processes
• be familiar with the core seamless design principles and know how to apply these design principles, together with others, in an exemplary practical context

What are the conference activities?

The conference is bilingual. In the morning we will start with an English introduction of the most important concepts, keynotes and examples of seamless learning scenarios and technological tools.  During the lunch break there will be English poster presentations from various projects on seamless learning. In the afternoon, there will be an interactive workshop where participants from different professional sectors will work together to design a seamless learning scenario for a specific learning context.  Several representatives of the public sector (e.g., museums) will be present to provide more information on affordances of their contexts. You will also receive an introduction to important ‘seamless learning’ design principles.

Seamless learning online: think, explore and discuss before and after the conference

The online learning activities, supported by the ELITE project, are intended for teachers and educational professionals who want to know more about seamless learning. You can therefore start learning more about seamless learning before the conference, together with other interested parties. Both before and after the conference, a number of learning activities will be offered for this purpose via the ELITE online learning environment.  More information will follow.

When and where?

The conference takes place on Friday 8 June 2018 from 9.30 am in the conference facilities of the Stay Okay hostel, Maastricht. At 4.30 pm, we will end the conference with  a reception and drinks. Costs, for non-students and alumni of the ‘Educational Science’ Masters Programme, are 100 euro, including lunch and refreshments during the day.

By whom?

The conference is organized by the Seamless Learning team of the Technology-Enhanced Learning and Innovation (TELI) research programme, in collaboration with the Master Educational Sciences of the Welten Institute, Open University of the Netherlands. In addition, various partners from our network are contributing to the conference.
