1. Background and purpose of the research
As part of my Master's thesis at the Faculty of Management at the Open University, I will be conducting research on the topic of the adoption of Low-Code Development platforms within organizations operating in the Netherlands. My supervisor for this research is Dr. Frank de Langen.
Low Code Development Platforms (LCDPs) represent a departure from traditional software development methods like the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), reducing coding time. This efficiency addresses the scarcity of experienced developers and associated recruitment costs, positioning LCDPs as an appealing alternative.
LCDPs offer benefits such as graphical interfaces and model-driven design, enabling faster app development and increased adaptability to market needs.
Due to LCDP's departure from coding-based development, users no longer need coding experience. This allows non-professional developers, also known as citizen developers, to be involved in software development projects. Gartner even predicts that by 2026, 80% of low-code software users will come from non-IT backgrounds, up from 60% in 2021.
The objective of this research is to acquire deeper insights into the adoption of Low-Code Development Platforms (LCDPs) using the TOE (Technological, Organizational, Environmental) Model. Through empirical research into the drivers and barriers of LCDP adoption within companies active in the Netherlands, this study aims to contribute to the understanding of this subject. This will be achieved by validating the findings of both Naqvi et al. (2023) and Käss et al. (2023) against a larger population. Both studies relied on a relatively small number of expert interviews. By validating the outcomes against a larger population, efforts are made to gain more profound insights and provide a broader perspective on the factors influencing the adoption of Low-Code Development Platforms within Dutch companies.
2. What participation means and what is expected of you
Your answers may help improve the understanding of LCDP adoption within companies active in the Netherlands. When participating in this study, you will be asked to complete an online questionnaire. You find the respective link at the bottom of this page. The questionnaire will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
3. Possible advantages and disadvantages
By participating in the study, you contribute to scientific knowledge on the topic of LCDP adoption within companies active in the Netherlands. No adverse effects are expected from participating in this study. Should you nevertheless experience unpleasant feelings after participating in this study, you can always contact the research team via email: Bryan Bos and Frank de Langen.
4. If you do not want to participate or want to stop the study
You decide whether you will participate in the research. Participation is voluntary. If you do not want to participate, this does not have any negative consequences for you. If you do participate, you can always change your mind and quit, even during the research. You do not have to explain why you quit. The data collected up to that moment may be used for the research.
5. End of participation
Your participation in the study ends once you have completed all questions and completed the questionnaire by submitting the data, or if you decide in the interim to stop participating in the study. The entire research is finished when all participants are ready.
6. Use and retention of your data
The survey does not include personal questions such as age, gender, level of education, marital status, household composition, etc. The collection, use and storage of data regarding the questions that are asked, is necessary to answer the questions asked in this study. The data will be processed in the thesis and cannot be traced back to you.
Data can also be shared with other researchers to conduct further research. The data that will be shared does not contain any information that can be traced back to you. Further research does not hold any consequences and will be fully anonymous.
7. Confidentiality of your data
The data we collect cannot identify you and as such can be securely stored within the Open University. Persons who have access to the information are members of the review committee in order to assess whether the research has been carried out reliably.
8. Data retention period.
Your data must be retained by the Open University for 10 years.
9. More information about your rights in data processing
