4.2 Examples of Climate Services

Climate services have the ability to bring environmental data closer to stakeholders in a structured manner. The interactive 'climate stories' (klimaatverhalen) published by the province of Noord-brabant on their climate adaptation website are a great example of this. The climate stories provide insights on the effects that climate change is having on the region. The underlying data is presented in a structured manner that is accessible to stakeholders.

The climate stories are accessible through region's website: Klimaatverhalen - Klimaatadaptatie Provincie Noord-Brabant (klimaatadaptatiebrabant.nl). Through a story-telling approach, the website presents environmental data and maps focused on a range of themes.

One of the themes that is covered in the climate stories is urban heat-stress. One story in particular presents the current apparent temperature in the region on a map (see image below). An interactive element allows the user to compare this data to the projected apparent temperatures in 2050. The accompanying text explains the projection and hence makes the data more accessible and understandable to the user. Subsequently, the user is able to not only see the effects of climate change, but also understands the processes that contribute to these effects.

The climate stories published by the Province of Noord-Brabant are a great example of a climate service that makes data accessible to stakeholders. They demonstrate how data can be made more accessible and understandable through a story-telling approach.
